Accommodation in Rwanda
The principal brand name hotel in Kigali is the Kigali Serena. Serena Hotels is a Nairobi registered company that has locations throughout Africa that offer a uniformly high standard of service and accommodation. Ranking gradually lower are some 17 hotels and hostelries which means that finding accommodation in Kigali is rarely a problem.
The city has a reputation for high accommodation prices, and certainly budget accommodation establishments are very limited, but if you consider between US$10 and US$20 a night expensive then you would be best advised to steer clear of Rwanda.
In the northeast, where most tourists will ultimately end up, the town of Ruhengeri is the staging point on the way to the Parc National des Volcans, and has a single listed hotel and a handful of camps, guesthouses and lodges.
On the Lake Kivu waterfront the town of Gisenyi is the Hamptons of Kigali where the rich and famous linger and play amid private clubs, stylish hotels and well appointed private homes and villas. It is a charming town with a beachfront ambience and some five listed hotels, including another Serena, all a little on the pricey side, but tending on the whole to offer value for money in a vey laid back and pleasant location.
